Säätiö perustettiin teollisuusneuvos Rauno Mattilan elämäntyön ja hänen puolisonsa Marja Mattilan tuen pohjalta jatkamaan heidän perintöään – työtä, jossa korostuvat sitoutuminen, ammattitaito ja usko koulutuksen merkitykseen yhteiskunnan kehitykselle. Vuonna 2025 Rauno Mattila lahjoitti säätiölle sen peruspääoman, mikä mahdollisti säätiön toiminnan käynnistämisen.
